RecycleRight.org aims to take Franklin County residents' recycling skills to the next level

The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio has introduced a new website to help Franklin County residents recycle, compost, and discard no-longer-needed items more efficiently.

RecycleRight.org makes it easy to sort what can go in the recycling bin from things that belong in a compost pile or trash can.

SWACO’s "hope is residents will use the information in the search tool to reduce the amount of waste they send to the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill," Ty Marsh, SWACO’s executive director, wrote in a recent ThisWeek Community News column. "After all, the less waste we put into the landfill, the longer it will last us."

Having easy access to this information has never been more important. Per Recycle Right, "nearly 70% of all the material in the [Franklin County] landfill could have been recycled or composted."

Visitors to RecycleRight.org can browse frequently asked questions and an interactive chart of common recycling mistakes. You can even take a quiz to test your recycling know-how.

The centerpiece of the site is the Recycle & Reuse Search Tool, a visual menu of different refuse categories – household items, yard waste and organics, household hazardous waste, trash, and other items – that guides visitors through how to recycle everything from glass bottles and magazines to weeds, propane tanks, smoke detectors, and motor oil. Clicking on an item reveals safe disposal tips and the option to look up nearby disposal locations.

It’s never been easier – or more complicated – to recycle well. By now we all may know that plastic bags don’t belong in curbside or drop-box recycling, but less obvious mistakes are made every day.

Franklin County’s diversion rate – the percentage of county waste that avoids the landfill – is currently 49%, per Mr. Marsh. That's pretty good, but SWACO wants the rate to reach 75% by 2032.

"We’re trying to make it easier than ever for you to reduce your carbon footprint and the amount of waste you contribute to the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill," Mr. Marsh wrote.

Curbside recycling in The Glen is provided by Rumpke. You should consult Rumpke for guidelines on what types of items they do and do not accept for recycling. You can also call 1 (800) 828-8171.

An interactive map of SWACO’s drop-box recycling locations is available through Recycle Right. The nearest SWACO recycling drop-box to The Glen is located at Columbus Fire Station 30 on Fishinger Boulevard.
