Don't sign unsolicited quit-claim deeds without making a call first.
That's according to Franklin County auditor Michael Stinziano, who issued a warning Wednesday regarding fraudulent letters received by several county residents.
The letters ask recipients to sign and return quit-claim deeds in order to correct their property deeds. Doing so without checking with the auditor's office "could result in multiple consumers claiming ownership of the same property," per the bulletin.
The letters "mimic an official correspondence" from the state, according to the auditor's office, and are marked with the state seal.
"If there is any question about the authenticity of a document concerning your property, don’t hesitate to give the auditor’s office a call," Mr. Stinziano said. "We will do everything we can to protect homeowners from unscrupulous criminals."
The Franklin County auditor’s office can be reached at (614) 525-4663. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The bulletin also notes that the auditor's office "does not send representatives door-to-door to sign deeds."
