The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published an overview of how to make, clean, wear, and properly remove masks and cloth face coverings during the coronavirus disease 2019 ("COVID-19") public health emergency.

You can access the guide via the CDC's website or download a printer-friendly PDF copy for offline use.

Homemade face coverings can help prevent you from spreading the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 to others while preserving limited supplies of surgical masks and N-95 respirators for front-line medical personnel and other first responders. Keep in mind that homemade face coverings will not prevent you from contracting SARS-CoV-2.

COVID-19 is the respiratory illness caused by SARS-CoV-2.

It's imperative that you wear face coverings wherever social distancing is difficult. Workers at essential businesses like grocery stores and pharmacies are depending on you to wear a mask or cloth face covering while shopping or picking up a prescription.

According to the CDC:

Cloth face coverings should —

  • fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • be secured with ties or ear loops
  • include multiple layers of fabric
  • allow for breathing without restriction
  • be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape

In addition to wearing a face covering when in public, remember to wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water, avoid touching your face, and disinfect surfaces frequently.
