Franklin County auditor, treasurer ask state to extend property tax payment deadline

Franklin County auditor Michael Stinziano and treasurer Cheryl Brooks Sullivan on March 31 asked the state for permission to extend the deadline for paying county property taxes by 60 days – from June 22 to August 20 – in order to alleviate the burden on property owners during the coronavirus public health emergency.

"We recognize that these are difficult times," Mr. Stinziano said in a statement, "and are working to extend deadlines to accommodate anyone that is currently encountering hardships."

The request to the state is necessary because county treasurers in Ohio can only extend payment deadlines by a maximum of 30 days, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

"We will be having an extended date, no matter what," Ms. Sullivan told the Dispatch. "We just don’t know to what date, at this point."

The state has not yet approved the extension request.
