The Franklin County Board of Commissioners Tuesday began the process of putting a children’s services levy on the November ballot to replace an expiring tax assessment originally approved in 2009.

The request to voters will be for a 10-year renewal of Franklin County Children’s Services’ expiring 3.15-mill levy, which "generates about $84 million annually and costs property owners about $85 a year per $100,000 in home valuation," the Columbus Dispatch reports.

"There will be no additional costs to taxpayers with the renewal levy," county budget director Zak Talarek told the Dispatch.

FCCS receives the majority of its funding from a pair of staggered, 10-year property tax levies — a 1.9-mill levy last renewed by voters in 2014 and the 3.15-mill levy that expires this year.

The 3.15-mill levy alone "generated more than 42 percent of the FCCS operating budget in 2018," according to the Committee 4 Children, an organization supporting the renewal campaign.

The levy proposal now goes to Franklin County auditor Michael Stinziano for review, after which Franklin County’s commissioners will formally place it on the November ballot, per the Dispatch.

The November general election is Tuesday, November 5. Franklin County residents can register to vote or look up their polling locations through the Franklin County Board of Elections.

Voter registration for the election closes on October 7. Early and absentee voting opens the next day, on October 8.
