Recap – Summer '17

A header image announcing The Glen's Summer'17 series of articles.

Over the last few weeks, we've been posting a series of articles covering many of the camps, instructional programs, pools, and recreation centers that are convenient to Glen residents.

With the school year coming to a close, we thought it would be helpful to recap what we've talked about so far.

1. Cool off at one of Hilliard’s two municipal pools

You’re bound to spend some time at the pool this summer, swimming with the kids, lounging on a pool chair – maybe even floating down a lazy river or two. That’s why there’s no better way to kick off our Summer ‘17 series than with an overview of Hilliard’s municipal pools.

2. Your Columbus “Leisure Card” is a passport to fun

Many of the programs we’ll discuss as part of our Summer ‘17 series are managed by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. That’s why, before we cover anything else, it’s important to talk about Columbus’s “Leisure Card” program.

3. Dive into one of Columbus’s outdoor swimming pools

You have a lot of choices when it comes to deciding where to swim this summer. Last week, we talked about Hilliard’s two municipal pools ...

Today in Summer ‘17, we’re shifting gears to Columbus proper and the plethora of swimming pools available to city residents.

4. Spraygrounds, “open fountains” provide quick relief from the summer heat

Some days, you just don’t feel like going to a public pool.

Don’t get us wrong – our Columbus and Hilliard pools are great. But between getting the kids through the entrance queue, staking out a beach chair, and keeping everyone safe, happy, and fed, it’s amazing how quickly your whole day can be consumed by what you’d expected to be a fun, stress-free family outing.

For today’s entry in Summer ‘17, we’re outlining some truly spontaneous ways you and the kids can find relief from the summer heat while avoiding the hassles that go along with visiting outdoor swimming pools.

5. Keep the kids safe with swimming lessons at Hilliard's municipal pools

Your kids’ safety is always at the forefront of your mind when they’re near water – whether it’s a backyard swimming pool or the ocean waves that touch the shores of Florida and California. That’s why so many of us are eager to enroll our children in swimming lessons each summer.

Unfortunately, finding the right program isn’t always easy.

Today in Summer ‘17, we’re starting a two-part “mini-series” on local swimming lessons. And first on our list are the options available to you from Hilliard Recreation and Parks.

6. Columbus offers swim lessons for kids and adults

Monday in Summer ‘17, we went over local swimming lessons offered by Hilliard Recreation and Parks. Be sure to check out the post if you haven’t already!

But practicing your skills isn’t just good for kids. Learning is a lifelong process, after all, and Columbus is ready to assist all of us in our aquatic pursuits.

In today’s Summer ‘17 post, we’re continuing our swim lesson “mini-series” by going over the programs offered by Columbus Recreation and Parks – for both kids and adults.

7. Let your kids “discover boating” with Columbus Recreation and Parks

Sailing and canoeing are wonderful outdoor activities, ones in which we’re happy for our kids to take part – so long as they’re done safely.

When it comes to aquatic activities, it’s always “safety first,” and sitting in a boat instead of floating in the water doesn’t mean learning essential skills can take a backseat to having fun.

That’s why in Summer ‘17 we’re putting on our life jackets and highlighting the educational boating program run by Columbus Recreation and Parks.

8. Kids, pick up your tennis rackets. It’s time for a match!

These last few weeks in Summer ‘17 have been all about aquatic activities available from the Hilliard and Columbus recreation and parks departments. But there’s so much more your kids can do when school is out.

So this week we’re turning our attention to things that take place on dry land. First up: The tennis programs offered by Columbus Recreation and Parks.

There’re plenty of opportunities for the young and young at heart – but today, we’re starting with the young.

9. Get your swing back with tennis classes from CRPD

Tennis is truly a lifelong pursuit, perfect for the young and young at heart. Indeed, no matter your age, it’s a wonderful source of exercise and socialization.

Yesterday’s entry in Summer ‘17 covered all the ways your children can practice their craft with Columbus Recreation and Parks. But what about programs for you?

CRPD has plenty of opportunities for grown ups, as well, and they’re the topic of today’s article.

10. Dust off your clubs and head to a city golf course

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just out to spoil a good walk, an afternoon of golf is an excellent excuse to be outdoors on beautiful, summer days – and one that doesn’t require any yard work.

So for our next entry in Summer ‘17, we’re talking all things golf – from individual courses to camps and tournaments for the kids. And with so much to cover, we’re splitting this post across two days.

First up: The golf courses maintained by the City of Columbus.

11. Hit a hole-in-one at one of CRPD’s golf camps and tournaments

Yesterday in Summer ‘17, we talked about the six golf courses managed by Columbus Recreation and Parks (CRPD). Give it a read if you haven't already.
